The Washington University Medical Center is located east of Forest Park in St. Louis, near US Highway 40 and Kingshighway. The area covers 230 acres, spread over 12 city blocks. Most outpatient care is conducted on the north side of the campus, and most inpatient care is located on the south side of the area. Convenient parking is available to all facilities.
The Medical Center was incorporated in 1962 and now consists of Washington University School of Medicine, Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis Children's Hospital, Barnard Hospital, SIteman Cancer Center and the Central Institute for the Deaf, and is affiliated with BJC Health System. Integral units of the Medical Center include the world famous Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, the nation's leading programs in Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy, and the Institute for Biomedical Computing.
Unprecedented growth has occurred at the Medical Center over the past 10 years. At the School of Medicine alone during the past three years, more than $200 million has been expended on renovation and new construction. Capital improvements have added 360,000 square feet of space to the medical school during this period. A final stage calls for 60,000 additional square feet of space to be created.
The jewel in the crown is the innovative and convenient Center for Advanced Medicine. The concept is a joint project of Washington University Physicians and Barnes-Jewish Hospital. The beautiful new building is purpose-designed for outpatient diagnostics and procedures, including the most modern surgicenter and the NCI-designated Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center. The facility has already won national honors for its patient-friendly architectural design. Adjacent parking facilities make access to this facility as convenient as possible.
